How long does the server usually take to come back online?

As soon as someone from the dev team notices the server is down it will be brought back on.

Well, I can ping wowrage.nl but still can't connect - at least I suppose the machine is alive ... maybe the 'game' is knackered?!?!

pinging wowrage.nl doesn't do anything.

You need to ping the actual host which is realm1.wowrage.nl

But it wouldn't matter because the result is the same for both IPs.
